Private Prescriptions

Policy on Converting Private Prescriptions to NHS Prescriptions

At Kingswood Surgery, we are committed to providing high-quality care to all our patients. We understand that some patients may seek private consultations and subsequently request the conversion of private prescriptions to NHS prescriptions. Our policy on this matter is guided by clinical appropriateness, safety, and adherence to NHS guidelines.

Our standard position is to decline the conversion of private prescriptions to NHS prescriptions. This policy is in place to ensure that all medications prescribed are clinically appropriate, safe, and in line with NHS prescribing guidelines.

Exceptions: Commonly Prescribed and On-License Medications

We may consider converting a private prescription to an NHS prescription if the following criteria are met:

  1. Commonly Prescribed on the NHS : The medication must be one that is routinely prescribed within the NHS framework. This ensures that the medication is familiar to our GPs and aligns with NHS treatment protocols. This would exclude any medication that would require regular follow ups or blood tests or any medications not on our local formulary.
  2. On-License : The medication must be licensed for the specific condition being treated. This ensures that the medication is approved for use in the UK for the intended purpose, safeguarding patient safety.

Considerations for Conversion

  • Clinical Necessity : The medication must be deemed clinically necessary by our GPs. If the medication is not considered essential for the patient's health, the request for conversion will be declined.
  • Communication with Private Consultant : In cases where conversion is considered, there should be clear communication between the private consultant and our GPs. This ensures that all relevant medical information is shared, allowing for informed decision-making. We would not prescribe on the basis of a hand written letter or a verbal directive given to a patient.
  • Specialised Medications : If the medication is specialised and not typically prescribed by GPs, it may not be converted. In such cases, the responsibility for prescribing remains with the specialist.

Patient Guidance

Patients are encouraged to discuss their medication needs with their private consultant and ensure that any prescribed medication aligns with NHS guidelines if they wish to seek conversion. It is important to understand that not all private prescriptions can be converted to NHS prescriptions.

Conclusion

Our policy is designed to ensure patient safety, adherence to NHS guidelines, and the responsible use of NHS resources. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter. There is no avenue to appeal if a prescription were to be declined. We will aim to give you a written response via text message if this is the case.
