Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a condition with causes that are not entirely understood. It involves a 'hypersensitive' gut, which can result in a variety of symptoms such as:
- Abdominal pain or discomfort
- Bloating
- Excessive wind
- Urgency to open the bowels
- A sensation of incomplete bowel evacuation
- Diarrhoea or constipation (or alternating between these)
- Nausea
- Stomach gurgling
- Belching, heartburn, and reflux
- Tiredness or lethargy
These symptoms can fluctuate over time, be consistently present to some extent, or appear and disappear without clear reason. Factors like stress, anxiety, or a busy lifestyle can contribute to flare-ups or worsening of symptoms. While IBS can be challenging to manage, making dietary and lifestyle adjustments can significantly improve symptoms and enhance your quality of life.
Individuals with other gastrointestinal conditions, such as inflammatory bowel disease or coeliac disease, may experience IBS-like symptoms alongside their primary condition. They may also find relief through similar dietary and lifestyle changes. Please refer to the attached document for guidance on dietary modifications.
